Over time, I’ve learned that connection with God during fasting doesn’t have to be loud or complicated. It just needs to be consistent. These are five practical things I do during fasting periods to make sure I’m staying connected to God throughout the day, in real life.
1. I Keep the Daily Prayer Points Visible
One of the first things I do is print out the daily prayer points or save them as my phone screensaver. That way, every time I open my phone, I’m reminded of what I should be praying about.
It helps me stay aligned and intentional, even in short moments.
“Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Sometimes prayer isn’t about long hours; it’s about frequent connection. Seeing the prayer point prompts me to pause, whisper a prayer, and refocus my heart.
2. I Listen to Gospel Music Throughout the Day
Worship music stays on repeat during fasting. While working, commuting, or doing chores, gospel music creates an atmosphere that keeps my spirit sensitive. Check out my current Playlist.
Some songs stir something so deep that I begin to pray, worship, or speak in the Holy Ghost right where I am.
“Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit… always giving thanks to God.” Ephesians 5:19–20
Worship helps me stay spiritually alert, even when my body is tired.
3. I Watch Spirit-Filled Christian Movies
During fasting periods, I intentionally watch Christian movies that strengthen my faith especially films by Mount Zion Film Productions.
Even when I’ve seen them before, I rewatch them. Every season reveals something new, sometimes a lesson I wasn’t ready to receive the first time.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23
What we watch matters, especially during consecration seasons. I choose content that builds my spirit, not drains it.
4. I Meditate on One Scripture Each Day
Beyond reading my Bible, I meditate on the Word. Each day, I pick one scripture and carry it with me throughout the day, thinking about it, praying it, and letting it speak to my situations.
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night.” Joshua 1:8
Meditation keeps the Word alive. It turns scripture from information into transformation.
5. I Practice Kindness, Awareness, and Grace
During fasting, I try to be more intentional about kindness, being gracious, accommodating, and aware of people’s needs, without betraying myself or my boundaries.
Fasting isn’t only about what we give up physically; it’s also about what we produce spiritually.
“Be kind and compassionate to one another.” Ephesians 4:32
“By their fruit you will recognise them.” Matthew 7:16
When practiced consistently, these attitudes begin to shape who you are. Even 30 days of intentional living can reset your posture.
Final Thoughts
I’m only on day four of this fast, It’s been incredibly beautiful.
Fasting without prayer misses the heart of the discipline. Prayer matters. Studying the Word matters. Being spiritually alert, having eyes that see and ears that hear, matters.
With Love,
Ayo.
