How a Printing Disaster Almost Ruined My Event Week | Business Wednesday

Hi guys, so I know I said I was going to be back on Wednesday and honestly… today has been absolute chaos 😭

Let me quickly give you the gist of why I couldn’t post earlier.

So yesterday (Tuesday), I received some deliveries for an event I have on Friday. Normally when parcels arrive, I don’t immediately open them to inspect every single thing because, honestly, I’ve never really had issues before.

But this morning, while preparing my “I’m back” post for 12 p.m., something just told me:
“Ayo… open the parcels properly.”

Guys.

I ordered 150 menus.
Tell me why they sent me 50 😭

FIFTY!!!

And these weren’t just ordinary menus I could quickly print at home. I specifically chose a luxury textured paper because I wanted the menus to feel premium and elegant for my client’s event. I could technically print menus myself, but I didn’t want a DIY finish. I wanted quality.

So immediately I saw it, I contacted the company.
I explained the situation and told them I needed the remaining menus before Friday.
They then told me they couldn’t get it to me until Tuesday.

TUESDAY???
For a FRIDAY event???

At that point I said okay, no problem, let me at least get a refund then.

Guys… the refund was £8 😭

I was actually staring at my phone like:
“Are you people alright?”

But one thing I told myself from the very beginning of starting my events business is this:

In events, panic cannot be your first response.
Solution must be your first response.

Because once you panic, your brain stops working.

And honestly, this situation reminded me why networking and building relationships within your local business community is SO important.

A few months ago, I attended a breakfast morning for small business owners in Shropshire and met someone in printing. I remember specifically asking him questions like:
“What happens if I need something urgently?”
“How fast is your turnaround time?”
“Can I rely on you for last-minute requests?”

And thankfully… I remembered him today.

Not only did they sort out my menu issue, but my client also suddenly requested place cards for every guest table 😭 and they STILL managed to help me with that too.

I literally just sent the design over and they handled it.

And that, guys, was my Wednesday 😂

Madness.
Pure madness.

But honestly, one of the reasons I was even able to survive today without losing my mind is because… I finally hired someone for the business.

And whew.
That’s a story for another day.

I was genuinely terrified of hiring someone on a regular part-time basis because to me it felt like:
“Now somebody’s livelihood partly depends on me.”

That responsibility scared me so much.

But taking this short break really helped me mentally, emotionally and structurally. I needed it more than I realised.

Anyway… I’m back!

And tomorrow I can’t wait to properly catch up with all the parents because things on that side have also been beautifully chaotic 😂.

I hope you’ve had a lovely Wednesday.
I know it’s late, but I told myself I was coming back today no matter what.

So here I am 😊
Goodnight guys

With Love,
Ayo
