Observe, Don’t Absorb: Why Your Environment Shapes Your Behaviour

There’s a quote that has stayed with me for a long time:

“Learn to observe, not absorb.”

At first, it sounds simple, almost like something we already do.

But the truth?

It takes a deep level of self-awareness to truly observe something without absorbing it.

Because whether we like it or not, what we see, hear, and surround ourselves with always leaves a mark.

You think you’re just watching people…

But slowly, quietly, you are becoming.

Why Your Environment Matters More Than You Think

A lot of people say:

“I can be around certain people and it won’t affect me.”

I used to think that too.

But I can confidently tell you today, it does affect you.

Not loudly.
Not immediately.
But subtly, gradually… over time.

Because exposure leads to familiarity.
And familiarity eventually becomes behaviour.

One day, you might react in a way that doesn’t even feel like you.

And that’s when it hits you.

It’s Not Just About Friendship

This goes beyond who you call your friends.

It’s about:
What you watch
What you listen to
The conversations you entertain
The environments you stay in

Stay around dishonesty long enough, it starts to feel normal.
Stay around gossip, you’ll eventually join in.
Stay around shortcuts, and integrity begins to feel optional.

Even at work.

You might see people cutting corners or getting away with things.

At first, you observe it.

But if you stay long enough… you may start to justify it.

And one day, when accountability comes, you’re caught in something you once knew wasn’t right.

Observe Once, Then Decide

Here’s what I’ve learned:

Observe once.
Observe twice.
By the third time, make a decision.

Because staying in the wrong environment is not neutral.

It is influential.

And influence is power.

Guard What Shapes You

The truth is, you are not as immune as you think.

None of us are.

So:
Guard your eyes
Guard your ears
Guard your heart
Guard your environment

Because what you constantly observe…
you will eventually absorb.

And what you absorb…
will shape who you become.

Final Thoughts

If your mindset is constantly leaning towards failure, negativity, or limitation, pause and look around you.

What are you consistently exposed to?

Because the shift you need might not be internal first…

It might be environmental.

Surround yourself with:
Growth
Integrity
Kindness
Intentional living

And watch your life begin to reflect it.

And more importantly be that person too.

Be the positive influence.
Be the standard.
Be the shift.

Happy Monday

And because it’s still a holiday…
I’ve got something fun for you later today 👀

Come back at 12 noon(UK time) for a “Never Have I Ever” game, very Ayo, a little spicy, a little fun, perfect for lovers or just a good laugh to wrap up the bank holiday 😉.

With Love,
Ayo
