Discomfort Is a Doorway: How Growth Happens When You Don’t Get Stuck

There’s a quote that says, “We grow through what we go through.”

And when I first really sat with it, it stopped me in my tracks.

Because the truth is this: many of us don’t know how to sit with discomfort.

We don’t know how to sit with hurt.

We don’t know how to sit with disappointment.

We don’t know how to experience pain without letting it consume us.

So instead of moving through what we’re experiencing, we get stuck in it.

We wallow.

We shrink.

We let one “no” become the end of our trying.

But that’s not what we’re meant to do.

We are meant to go through what we go through, not camp there, not build a home there, not let it define us.

Discomfort is not a stop sign.

It’s a doorway.

And yet, especially in this generation, I’ve noticed how easily we stop.

A “no” at work becomes, maybe this isn’t for me.

A business setback becomes, maybe I’m not cut out for this.

A disappointment in love becomes, I’m done.

But growth doesn’t come from avoidance.

Growth comes from movement.

Don’t Get Stuck: Name What You’re Going Through

If you’re reading this this morning, let me say this clearly:

Don’t get stuck on what you’re going through.

One of the most practical and powerful things you can do is this:

Name it.

What are you actually dealing with?

  • Disappointment
  • Rejection
  • Burnout
  • Confusion
  • A loss of motivation

Until you name it, it remains this heavy, undefined thing weighing you down.

Naming it brings clarity.

And clarity creates movement.

Pain is information. Use it.

Understand the Why

The next step is understanding why.

If it’s a job interview, ask for feedback. Always ask.

If someone offers constructive feedback, receive it — even if it stings.

And yes, sometimes people are not gentle with their words.

Sometimes feedback isn’t packaged nicely.

But don’t get stuck there either.

Once you understand the why, you’re no longer powerless.

I reflect deeply. I dissect situations from every angle until I understand what didn’t work — or what needs adjusting. Because once I understand the why, I can ask the next question:

How do I approach this differently?

You can’t re-strategise what you don’t understand.

Re-Strategise With Intention

And this doesn’t just apply to work or business.

It shows up in spiritual life, too.

Let’s say it’s your prayer life.

You notice it’s declined, and you’re wondering why you don’t pray like you used to. If you don’t understand the reason, you can’t rebuild it.

But once you do?

You can take intentional, practical steps to get back to where you want to be.

The same applies to career, business, relationships, and everything.

If your goal is growth:

  • Learn from people who are doing what you want to do
  • Ask questions
  • Listen carefully
  • Observe what works and what doesn’t

Growth doesn’t happen by accident.

It happens with intention.

Write the Steps, Then Take Them

Once you’ve named the problem and understood the why, write down small, practical steps.

Not overwhelming ones.

Not perfect ones.

Just honest, doable steps.

Step by step, you move forward.

A Monday Reminder

So let me leave you with this:

We grow and glow through what we go through.

We do not diminish.

We do not become smaller.

We do not stop the drive.

We do not stop the chase.

We keep going until something shifts.

And it will shift.

With optimism.

With strategy.

And if you’re a Christian, with prayer.

Happy Monday from me.

With love,

Ayo ♡
