Life can become so busy that we rush from one deadline to the next, one event to another, without stopping to appreciate the moments that quietly bring us joy. This is me slowing down.
So here are five things I’ve absolutely loved this week.
If you’ve read my recent post, you’ll know I’m completely in love with Book Ends in Wellington. I won't shout up about it.
If you’re ever nearby or even just passing through, I think it deserves a place on your to-do list.
There’s something magical about independent bookshops. The smell of books, the peaceful atmosphere, and the opportunity to slow down for a little while reminded me how much I’d missed simply wandering through shelves without being in a rush.
2. Falling Back in Love with Engineering
This week reminded me why I became an engineer in the first place.
I’ve been completely immersed in electromagnetic theory, revisiting concepts I hadn’t explored in years and peeling back each layer until everything started making sense again.
I’ve loved deriving equations, drawing equivalent circuit diagrams, working through resistor, inductor and capacitor models, and seeing how the mathematics connects everything together.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about starting with a complex problem and slowly building an understanding of it, one equation at a time.
I hadn’t realised how much I’d missed this side of engineering.
It’s challenged me in the best possible way, and I’ve genuinely looked forward to sitting down and working on it each day.
As much as I love running my businesses and writing, this week reminded me that I’ll always be an engineer at heart. I love solving problems. I love understanding how things work. I love asking “why?” until I get to the answer.
I’m genuinely excited about this project, and I can’t wait to present my findings when the time comes.
Sometimes, all it takes is the right project to remind you why you fell in love with your career in the first place.
3. Buying My First Book of the Year
This one is slightly embarrassing.
I haven’t bought a single book this year.
I’ve been so focused on work, business, family and life that reading somehow slipped down my priority list.
Walking into Book Ends changed that.
I picked up The Psychology of Money, and I was delighted to discover it was by the same author whose work has been recommended alongside Atomic Habits, one of my all-time favourite books. It’s a book I’ve highlighted, scribbled notes in, and returned to more times than I can count.
I’m only just getting started with my new book, but it already feels like exactly what I needed.
It was also a reminder that investing in your mind is just as important as investing in your career.
4. My New Favourite Parfait
I’ve become slightly obsessed with making parfaits this week.
The inspiration actually came from my favourite girl Yetty, who made one over the weekend. Unfortunately, I never got to try it, so I decided to make my own instead.
Safe to say… I’m hooked.
Spot her secret recipe😋
* Yeo Valley Organic Natural Yoghurt
* Jordans Crunchy Oat Granola with Tropical Fruit
* Grapes
* Strawberries
* Apples
I layer yoghurt, granola, more yoghurt, more granola, another generous layer of yoghurt, and then finish it with lots of fresh fruit.
I’m very generous with the yoghurt, so every spoonful is creamy rather than dry.
I’ve already finished one tub of yoghurt, and my granola is disappearing much faster than I’d like to admit!
This breakfast is definitely staying in my routine.
5. Saying Yes to Placement Students
When a local school in Telford first contacted me about taking on placement students this year, my first instinct was actually to say no.
Life is already busy, the business is growing, and the next few weeks are going to be full on.
I wasn’t sure how I’d find the time.
Thankfully, I said yes.
Looking back, I’m so glad I did.
Watching them learn, ask questions, contribute ideas and grow in confidence has been incredibly rewarding.
At the same time, they’ve genuinely made a difference to the business and helped lighten the workload during what promises to be one of our busiest periods.
More than anything, I love investing in young people.
I’ve always had a heart for helping children and young adults develop their confidence, discover what they’re capable of, and believe in themselves.
Being able to mentor them while also learning from them has been such a privilege.
Sometimes giving back ends up giving you far more than you expected.
Final Thoughts
Looking back over this list, none of these moments was particularly extraordinary.
A bookshop.
An engineering project.
A new book.
A homemade parfait.
A group of placement students.
Yet together, they’ve made this week feel incredibly full.
It’s a reminder that joy doesn’t always arrive in huge milestones.
Sometimes it quietly appears in ordinary moments that become unforgettable simply because we slowed down long enough to notice them.
I’d love to hear from you.
What are five things you’ve loved this week? I’d love to read them in the comments.
With Love,
Ayo
