A Simple Prayer Guide for Beginners (Using a Child’s Daily Prayer Routine)

If you have ever wondered how to say a simple prayer and didn’t know where to start, this is for you. This is the simple step-by-step prayer structure we use every night in our home.

This is the exact structure I use with my children every night  and my three-year-old now says it confidently on his own. You can also start here. This is part of my series Raising Godly Children.

It is not complicated.

It is not long.

It is not religious in a heavy way.

It is a gentle, practical way to build faith step by step.

We do this every single night.

No pressure, No perfection, Just Presence.

1. Start With Worship

We begin with a song.

Any worship song.

You don’t have to know the lyrics. Sometimes we simply play a song from Apple Music and let it fill the room. You can sing along, read the lyrics, or just listen.

Worship helps your heart settle and shifts your focus to God.

For children, it also makes prayer feel joyful and natural.

2. Thank God for What You Can See

After the song, we move into thanksgiving.

And this is very important

we start with what is visible.

My son thanks God for:

Himself

His Brother, Mum and Dad

His Teachers and Friends

His Cousins

His drink

His toys

The house

Why?

Because gratitude for what we can see builds faith for what we cannot yet see.

When a child learns to recognise God in everyday things, prayer becomes real to them.

This can sometimes take forever, he mentions everything he sees even the rug 😂😂.

3. Ask for Mercy and Forgiveness

Next, we ask God for mercy.

In simple words.

Not just for “big sins,” but for:

Not being kind

Not listening

Making someone sad

Disobeying

And if a child doesn’t fully understand this part yet, that’s okay. Prayer is a journey, not a performance.

4. Ask God for Something

Then we make our requests known to God.

I always guide my children to pray for:

Wisdom

Knowledge

Understanding

Because as they grow, they will need:

Wisdom to choose the right friends

Understanding in school

Knowledge to learn and develop

Of course, they can also ask for anything else in their hearts.

This part makes me laugh every night because the list never ends 😂

This teaches them that God cares about their lives.

5. Thank God for the Answer

Before we end, we say:

“Thank You, God, because You have answered our prayer.”

This builds confidence in God and teaches them to pray with faith, not fear.

6. Close With the Grace

We end with the grace every night.

It gives them structure, consistency, and a sense of peace before sleep.

Letting Your Child Lead

Some nights I pray over them out loud.

Other nights, I stay quiet and let them lead.

Because prayer is not just something I want them to hear

it is something I want them to own.

Why This Simple Prayer Matters

This routine is not about raising “religious” children.

It is about raising children who:

Know God

Talk to God naturally

Trust God daily

And if you are an adult who doesn’t know where to start, you can use this exact same structure.

Start small.

Start simple.

Start today.

Final Encouragement

If this guide helped you, then you are ready for the next step in your prayer journey.
