If you’re a small business owner, this one is for you.
I decided to answer 10 important questions every small business owner should answer, not in a textbook way, but honestly, from lived experience. So let me take you on my journey.
OZ Events Ltd is my creative events styling business, built on bold ideas, unforgettable celebrations, and a lot of faith. What started as a party for my own children has grown into a brand creating themed children’s parties, adult parties, corporate events, bespoke centrepieces, creative backdrops, and immersive event experiences. It has now become the standard for Nigerian parties in Shropshire.
OZ Events Ltd didn’t just start a business.
It started a trend.
1. If my business were a person, how would I describe their personality?
My business is bold.
It’s daring.
It’s constantly evolving.
It’s loud, charismatic, and a little spontaneous.
If my business walked into a room, you’d feel it before you saw it.
2. What problem did my business originally start out to solve, and how has that changed?
When I started, I realised something was missing.
I never really saw Nigerian parties in the UK done the way we do them back home. The colour, the energy, the detail, the celebration. And I thought, we have the community, we have the people, and we definitely have the coins.
So I decided to throw that kind of party… for my own children.
That day, I landed my first client.
She saw what I did and said, “Can you do this for my child?”
Since then, my business has evolved a lot.
I don’t just plan events, I style them and create an experience. I also hire out event items, and I’m constantly adding new offerings. Growth is part of the DNA.
3. What’s one thing people don’t see behind the scenes that would surprise them?
The amount of work that goes into planning and decoration.
People massively underestimate it.
I’m actually recording this while preparing one of my most beautiful centrepieces yet, and it’s taken hours. Sometimes a full day. Sometimes close to 24 hours. Balloon prep alone is no joke.
It looks effortless when it’s done… but it never is.
4. What part of my business do I enjoy the most, even on stressful days?
Event day.
No matter how stressful it is, that day hits different.
I eat a lot. I drink a lot. I probably gain a kilo.
I don’t sleep until around 4am, and I’m back up by 6am.
But seeing everything come to life?
Seeing the client’s face.
Seeing the child’s excitement?
Those are my best days.
5. What’s the biggest lesson my business has taught me about myself?
Patience, with people and with process.
I let my clients lead, but I also know when to step in and guide them, especially when I feel they’re spending money in the wrong places.
Another huge lesson has been faith.
There have been so many moments where God has inspired an idea, and I’ve tried to do the opposite, only to come back to exactly what He said in the first place.
This current centrepiece I’m working on? Completely God-inspired. I told him I wanted something original, and it’s nothing like anything I’ve done before.
I’ve also learned this:
Remain calm. Always.
No matter how bad a situation looks, calmness creates solutions. Panic never does.
6. What was my “I can’t believe someone actually paid me for this” moment?
I had a client who didn’t question a single price.
Not one.
I was the one who ended up offering a discount.
That moment taught me something powerful: it’s not about how many clients you have, it’s about having the right clients. People who see the value and are happy to pay for it.
God has truly been faithful.
7. What’s one mistake I made early on, and what did it teach me?
Talking.
I’m introverted. I don’t naturally talk much.
But business requires visibility.
People can’t book what they don’t know exists.
So I’ve been learning to introduce myself, collaborate, speak up, and show my work.
Another big mistake? Pricing.
I priced low so people would book me, which meant more work, more energy, more stress. Now, I charge properly. If someone can’t pay my fees, that’s okay; they’re just not my client.
And that lesson changed everything.
8. If I could describe my brand in three words, what would they be?
Bold.
Audacious.
Sophisticated.
Every year, it gets better. Every event raises the bar.
9. What kind of clients do I enjoy working with the most?
Clients who know what they want, and clients who let their children lead.
I love it when parents allow their child’s personality to shine instead of forcing their own preferences.
And I’ll be honest, clients who constantly question pricing drain me. I don’t mind respectful questions, but I don’t enjoy defending value.
My best clients trust the process and let me do what I do best.
10. Where do I see my business in a year, if everything works out better than I expect?
First, I know everything will work out.
Completely transformed.
I’m building a structure. I’m creating departments. I’m setting systems.
Very early on, I insured my business properly, including anyone hired, volunteers or interns. That decision has allowed me to grow safely and confidently.
In a year, this business will look very different, and I’m excited about that.
A Final Thought: Where I See This Going
In addition to everything I’ve shared, one thing I’ve been very intentional about is building people alongside the business.
I’ve gone into schools to speak about my internship programme, and I’ve reached out to different organisations and spaces where people can volunteer and learn through hands-on experience. Some of the people who work with me are paid, and some are in learning or volunteer roles, and that structure has made growth both sustainable and meaningful.
They get exposure, skills, confidence, and real-life experience.
And I benefit from their support, creativity, and energy.
It’s a two-way exchange, and it works.
When I look ahead, I don’t just see bookings and events.
I see greatness.
I see this business becoming full-time and not in some distant future, but very soon. I see structure, teams, systems, and scale. I see something that started with a simple idea growing into a brand with impact.
This journey has shown me that when purpose, faith, and preparation meet opportunity, growth is inevitable.
And honestly?
This is only the beginning.
