“A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself.” Oprah Winfrey
And that’s so profound, because sometimes you can’t see the greatness in you.
You can’t see the strengths you’ve built.
You can’t see the seeds of brilliance you’re carrying.
You can’t even see the light you’re giving off.
But someone who has walked ahead… someone who listens, observes, and believes in you… can often see the qualities you overlook. A mentor doesn’t just guide you; a mentor holds up a mirror and shows you the version of yourself you haven’t grown into yet, but already carry inside.
That is why mentorship matters.
Do you have a mentor?
If you don’t, you’re already slowing yourself down.
I can never overemphasise the importance of mentorship. Not just having a mentor, but choosing the right mentor intentionally.
Here is something I’ve learned:
You need mentors who have access to rooms you don’t yet have the keys to.
In every industry, especially in countries like the UK, senior leadership spaces, strategic decision-making tables, and influential networks can sometimes feel distant or inaccessible. Not because you aren’t qualified, but because access often comes through proximity, wisdom, and guidance from people who already operate at those levels.
This is why choosing your mentors intentionally matters.
Some mentors guide you emotionally and intellectually.
Some help you navigate identity, resilience, and confidence.
Others offer something equally important: access, visibility, and sponsorship, the kind that accelerates your growth in ways you cannot always create by yourself.
Both types are valuable.
Both types are necessary.
When you combine wisdom from someone who understands your personal journey and guidance from someone who navigates the spaces you’re trying to grow into, the result is unmatched.
Now pause and consider these three questions:
Where are you going?
What do you need to learn?
Who can you ask for wisdom?
These questions matter deeply for your career.
Don’t ever isolate yourself or feel like you’re too advanced to learn from someone who has already walked your path. Pride will slow you down. Silence will confuse you. Guessing your way through a path someone else has already mastered is unnecessary.
Let me also be transparent about my current situation.
My biggest struggle in my career is maintaining focus, as electrical and electronic engineering is such a broad field. Some areas excite me, some don’t. Some pathways appear promising, others seem misaligned. And I’ve had moments of confusion.
So this month, I made a decision:
I’m speaking to people who have walked the roads I’m considering.
I’m asking questions.
I’m seeking clarity.
I’m refusing to stay stuck in silence.
Because clarity doesn’t always come from thinking.
Sometimes it comes from asking.
So if you don’t have a mentor today, this is your sign. Start looking.
Tell them your struggles.
Tell them your goals.
Let people pour into you.
Get talking.
Get asking.
Get cracking.
Your next season depends on it.
Happy Monday
With Love,
Ayo ♡
