The cosy months are coming.
The weather starts changing, the evenings begin getting darker, and suddenly you want to curl up somewhere warm and make life feel just a little bit cosier.
So, if you don’t already have these, here are five things I think you might want to consider getting or doing
to get yourself ready for autumn.
to get yourself ready for autumn.
Guys, I used to be one of those people who just did not wear scarves to bed.
At all.
But the last time I did my hair, everyone kept saying:
“Your hair still looks so nice.”
“Your hair has lasted!”
“Your hair looks really good.”
Blah, blah, blah.
Do you know what saved the day?
My silk scarf.
Honestly, I have been converted.
If you’re spending money getting your hair done, especially as we go into the colder months, get yourself a silk scarf and protect it properly.
Mine has officially earned its place on my September essentials list.
2. A Book
The second thing I think every woman needs this autumn is a book.
A book.
If you haven’t started reading, September is such a lovely time to begin.
And it doesn’t have to be a self-help book.
I tend to read a lot of self-help and personal-development books, but this month I’m doing something completely different. I’ve picked up a little book, and I’ve decided I’m going to read one chapter every day.
That’s it.
Some of the chapters are literally three pages long, but I don’t care.
One chapter a day.
And I’m giving myself permission to marinate in it.
When I say marinate, I mean I want to properly enter the world of the book.
If the author says she’s just had a shot of vodka, I want to feel that vodka going down my throat. I want to imagine that hot, burning sensation travelling from my throat all the way down into my chest.
And with the way I’m describing vodka right now, you’d think I actually drink.
I don’t. 😂
I’m not a drinker at all.
I have had vodka once, though.
I think I had reached that stage of curiosity where I thought, What does alcohol actually taste like?
And somehow, the first drink I was introduced to was something with about 40% alcohol.
FORTY PERCENT.
That experience answered my question very quickly.
That was enough for me.
Anyway, back to the book before this accidentally becomes a story about my very brief relationship with vodka.
Get yourself a book this autumn.
Not because you have to finish 50 books before the end of the year. Not because you’re trying to hit some massive reading target.
Just find something you genuinely enjoy and give yourself permission to read it slowly.
This one goes perfectly with number two.
Get yourself a little reading light.
I tend to read either very early in the morning or at night, and sometimes I don’t want to switch on the bedroom light.
Even my bedside lamp can feel like too much because it still lights up quite a bit of the room.
So, a little reading light that I can clip directly onto my book?
Perfect.
I can clip it on, get comfortable and read.
More importantly, I’ve removed another excuse.
I can’t say, “Oh, it’s too dark.”
I can’t say, “I don’t want to put the light on.”
Nope.
Clip.
Light.
Book.
Read.
Sometimes, making a habit easier is simply about removing all the little things that make it inconvenient.
4. A Walking Route
This one isn’t technically something you need to buy, but I think it’s an autumn essential nonetheless.
Pick a walking route.
As the weather starts changing, it’s very easy to become less active.
During summer, we’re naturally outside more. We’re going places, doing things, enjoying longer days and generally moving around.
Then autumn arrives.
Then winter.
And suddenly we’re indoors trying to keep warm.
So this September, choose a route that you can walk regularly.
It doesn’t need to be some huge fitness challenge.
Even 10 minutes counts.
Ten minutes outside.
Ten minutes of movement.
Ten minutes of fresh air.
If it’s breezy, dress appropriately.
If it’s cold, layer up.
If it’s drizzling, get the right coat.
Obviously, if the weather is genuinely unsafe, stay inside. But otherwise, I don’t want the changing seasons to automatically mean I stop moving.
I want to keep getting outside.
Okay, I’m cheating slightly because this is technically two things.
But I refuse to separate them.
Lip balm and cosy socks.
You guys already know I live for a good pair of socks.
Honestly, I wear socks even when it isn’t cold.
That’s just who I am at this point.
So once autumn comes around?
Oh, we’re getting serious about the socks.
And then there’s my lip balm.
At the moment, I’m using Vaseline, and it works really well for my lips. As the weather gets colder and everything starts feeling a little drier, I want to keep my lips hydrated, fresh and soft.
So my lip balm will absolutely be coming everywhere with me.
Bag?
Lip balm.
Bedside?
Lip balm.
Going out?
Lip balm.
And preferably, cosy socks on my feet too.
September Is Your Head Start
I don’t think we need to wait until it’s freezing outside before we start preparing for the cosy months.
September is the transition.
It’s that lovely little space between summer and proper autumn where you can start adjusting your routines, slowing things down slightly and thinking about how you want the next few months to feel.
For me, that’s reading more slowly, protecting my hair, getting outside even when the weather isn’t perfect, keeping my lips moisturised and, obviously, wearing very nice socks.
Nothing groundbreaking.
Just little things that make the changing season feel that bit nicer.
So, if you’re getting yourself ready for autumn too, consider this your little September checklist.
Silk scarf.
A good book.
Reading light.
A walking route.
Lip balm and cosy socks.
And just like that, we’re ready for the cosy months.
With Love,
Ayo
