Three Families, One Fab Time at Barmouth, Wales

Day 1: Beach Bliss

I’ve always thought going to the beach alone is boring, and guess what?

I was right. This time, we went with friends and family, and it was an absolute blast! Here are a few things we brought along that made our day unforgettable:

Beach Essentials:

• Book a beachfront hotel – We stayed at a colourful, multicoloured beachfront hotel, which made everything convenient and stress-free.

  

• Bin bags – Always handy for keeping the beach clean.

• Food sharing – No beach trip is complete without our favourite Nigerian jollof rice with barbecue turkey and chicken. We also brought puff puff, meat pies, malt, drinks, and water. Sharing food is a must!

• Disposable plates and spoons – Simple but life-saving for group meals.

• Small speaker – To play our favourite Afrobeat tunes.

• Games for all ages – Adults enjoyed Chess, Scrabble, and Snakes & Ladders, while the kids loved water guns, volleyball, and beach paddles for frescobol.

• Comfort items – Mats, chairs, and an umbrella are essential for ultimate relaxation.

After hours of laughter, games, and sun, we noticed the tide creeping closer, signalling it was time to pack up. But we didn’t leave before catching the stunning sunset. A perfect end to a perfect day.

Day 2: Exploring Freestyle
We didn’t plan much for Day 2, so it was all about spontaneity. After breakfast, we strolled along the beachfront and stumbled upon some fun activities:

•  Barmouth Beach playground – The kids discovered a huge playground. They went on bumper cars, helter-skelter rides, bungee jumping, a giant slide, and arcade games. Most activities were £4 per child or via token packs (£20 for 25 tokens, £10 for 12).

• Barmouth Harbour ferry – We took a short ferry ride (£4 per adult, £3 per child) to explore a new part of the beach. The ride was under five minutes, but the views were breathtaking. The ferry only holds eight passengers, so we made two trips.

• Fairbourne Steam Railway – On the other side, the kids couldn’t resist the charming steam train. The ride was 20 minutes each way, passing Fairbourne Golf Club and waving at friendly locals along the way.

• Lunch at The Mermaid – Back in Barmouth, we had to choose between The Lobster Pot or The Mermaid, the famous fish and chips shop. We went with The Mermaid, and it did not disappoint. Adults enjoyed classic fish and chips, while the kids had fish and sausages. Truly one of the best meals we’ve had!

After our adventures, we walked back to our cars, said our goodbyes, headed home, and were already dreaming of the next trip.

Tips for a Fun Beach Weekend:

1. Go with friends or family, beach days are better together.

2. Plan a mix of structured and freestyle activities.

3. Bring games, music, and plenty of food.

4. Always be prepared for tides and weather.

Barmouth, Wales, gave us laughter, adventure, and memories we’ll cherish forever. We can’t wait to go back!
